Born under the sign of Scorpio in 1974.
Ali Akbar started experimenting with photography and design when he was at elementary school. He designed a newspaper from magazine's cut out and his own photographs, xeroxed it, then sold them in the neighbourhood. Although he couldn't get them sold, not even a single one, that experience didn't stop him from always keeping himself on his toes.
He was still a student at Jakarta Institute of Arts when he had his first encounter with advertising through Leo Burnett Kreasindo Indonesia. Started as a Graphic Designer, he was offered a position as an Art Director at Ogilvy & Mather Indonesia soon after that. And then he moved on to Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur and then back to Leo Burnett Kreasindo Indonesia.
Ali Akbar’s vision is at once minimalist, moody color, quirky & very graphic. He has ventured outside the advertising world by having a couple exhibitions. Right Wing Violence poster exhibition; a project in response to the impact of violence activities in Indonesia, in the name of Islam sponsored by Goethe Institut & Freedom Institute. Ali Akbar also contributed on Arena Billboard Exhibition, part of Jakarta Biennale 2009 project.
After 6 years in the advertising industry with a range of local to international awards, Ali Akbar decided to spread his wings even more. He set up Ali Akbar Studio, a photography studio focus on image making and conceptual commercial photography. Recently his photography work received an Honorable Mention from American Photo.
